Cal Fire new Tulare chief has local roots

Paul Marquez, a 27-year veteran of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, has been named chief of the Tulare unit.

Marquez started his career in Monterey County but has been in Tulare County for many years, most recently as assistant chief of operations. He is a second generation Cal Fire employee who grew up at the residence fire station in Three Rivers. His father, Pete Marquez Sr., is a retired battalion chief.

The Tulare unit provides wildfire protection for 600,000 acres in Tulare County and parts of Kern County, and has eight fire stations, an air tanker base and an inmate conservation camp.
