Real Estate: ClearPoint helping homeowners with foreclosure review

ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions is helping the federal government get the word out about a free independent foreclosure review program that will end this year.

The Independent Foreclosure Review determines whether a homeowner suffered from financial injury because of problems made during their home foreclosure process between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010. Homeowners could receive compensation if any errors are found.

ClearPoint, which has an office in Fresno, will help Valley homeowners determine if they qualify and help them apply for the review. The deadline is Dec. 31.

“Far too many potentially eligible consumers are not getting the help they need because of
misunderstandings that prevent them from requesting assistance through the Independent Foreclosure Review program,” said Martha Viramontes, director of housing counseling. “ClearPoint is reaching out to provide education and guidance to these individuals and families so they don’t miss this vital opportunity for help.”

The program is part of a settlement reached in April 2011 between the banks and the Fed and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. It is separate from the $25 billion National Mortgage Settlement in February.

Homeowners whose mortgages were held by 14 mortgage companies – including GMAC Mortgage, HSBC Finance Corporation, SunTrust Mortgage, and EMC Mortgage Corporation and its subsidiaries – can apply to have their loan files reviewed.
