New House members, including those from Valley, are sworn in

CHARLES DHARAPAK / ASSOCIATED PRESS – House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio performs a mock swearing in for Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford, Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, on Capitol Hill in Washington as the 113th Congress began. Valadao’s family poses with him — wife Terra and children Conner, 10, Madeline, 6, and Lucas, 2.

All 435 members of the 113th Congress were sworn in this afternoon en masse on the House floor.

Among them were veteran Valley legislators Jim Costa, a Fresno Democrat, and Devin Nunes, a Tulare Republican.

They were joined by newcomer David Valadao, who was elected to the newly redrawn 21st Congressional District, territory that largely was part of Costa’s old district. Valadao, a former one-term Assembly member, is new to Congress.

Another newcomer to the Valley — but not to Congress — is Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Roseville. The newly redrawn congressional lines pushed his northern California district far to the south, into Mariposa, Madera and Fresno counties.

As Valadao and McClintock come, Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Turlock, departs. His old district took in about 40% of the City of Fresno. His new district is far to the north, in Stanislaus County.

Right after the official swearing in, House Speaker John Boehner did individual “mock” swearing-in photos with members who wanted them. Among those who had pictures taken were Costa, Nunes and, in what may have been the most entertaining, Valadao.

As the photo was taken, Valadao’s 2-year-old son, Lucas, was dancing around. It was causing Boehner to laugh, and Boehner took to little Lucas, joking with him and tickling him.
