Fresno Co. Democratic Women’s Club puts out calendar to mark 80th anniversary

The Fresno County Democratic Women’s Club is 80 years old, and to commemorate the occasion, it has put out a 2013 calendar that features local prominent Democrats — most of them dedicated rank-and-file foot soldiers.

January, for instance, has the club’s president and vice-president — Susan Good and Carole Laval, respectively. In February, it’s Coke Hallowell and — proving that a women’s club isn’t for women only — Howard Watkins.

Not surprisingly for anyone who knows Watkins or sees him around town: His photo features him with a camera to his eye.

Though the calendar is almost exclusively local, May features the state’s two senators — Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, both Democrats. July has Rep. Jim Costa and Assembly Member Henry T. Perea, who are Fresno Democrats.

Several other well-known locals populate the calendar, including Ray Ensher, Billie MacDougall, Carol Bequette, Gail Gaston and Mary Stanley.

If it’s on the wall, people can learn a bit about each of the featured Democrats, and also see meeting dates for several Valley Democratic clubs.

Thank you to John Ellis for recognizing the efforts of the FCDWC, the longest and largest Democratic Club in the Central Valley. Proceeds from the sale of the limited edition calendar go to support Democratic candidates. They are going fast and go for $15. You can go on our website or come to our next meeting at The Ramada Inn the fourth Monday of the month at 11:30 am.
